Why the name ‘Le Garage’?

The garage of anyone who tinkers, fixes things, or expresses their stoke is a place of gathering, getting a little dirty, and making something special. Is it full of crusty junk at times? Sure. But with that every garage is also packed with life and potential. Greg’s shop is named Le Garage to point out that there is a powerful beauty in weathered but strong things. That making something that lasts, works well and looks good while doing it has far more value than buying something cheap off the shelf.

‘Le Garage’ pays homage to the ‘discotheque au go go’ that thrived during the 1960’s and 70’s inside a garage in North Beach Haven on Long Beach Island that was started by three lifeguards and an investor. The discotheque was all about music. Without alcohol being sold at the dance club, the focus was on dancing, having a good time, and jamming with friends. Greg’s father worked the door at the discotheque in the height of its popularity (yes, Bruce Springsteen played there). This gave Greg the inspiration to honor the closed dance hall that so many people in our community loved by naming the work shop in memory of it.

Greg’s shop is located on the bay side of Coral Street in Beach Haven. The building was constructed for an auto repair shop business that had been running for the past 75 years. It has now been retrofitted to serve as a place for people to experience how surfboards and wooden artwork is made in an immersive way. You can come watch wooden sculptures come to life, surfboards being made, learn to surf yourself, and train to become a healthier and happier person all at Le Garage.
